THE DARKEST HOUR MOVIE REVIEW

Now here’s a nice little movie to pass the afternoon with. Electrical aliens invade the world leaving a group of survivors to get through the streets of Moscow in a bid to reach other survivors. Following two Americans stuck in Russia after the invasion, they team up with a Russian businessman who screwed them oit of a deal earlier in the day along with two girls. The effects work brilliantly as we learn that the aliens are invisible in the daylight, their presence only seen when electrical equipment lights up. This gives the movie a ghostly supernatural edge and a clever twist as night becomes the only way to see them.

The effects where the aliens begin mass slaughter are wonderful as people and dogs are shredded in mid air with some deaths being particularly superb. When they learn that a submarine is waiting to take any survivors in order to meet up with similar subs across the world the race is on to reach it. the tension never lets up and we see how good humans are at adapting and coming up with counter measures to combat the aliens. We meet a man who has turned his flat and cat into a Faraday cage and a group of militia that are able to turn themselves and horses into anti alien weapons, especially as we learn the aliens are drilling for minerals all over the world.

Everything works here from script to screen with solid performances where no one is guaranteed to survive. The alien effects are top notch and the ending of the movie makes perfect sense in the world apocolypse.

A cracking movie with great imagination and worthy of a sequel.

JOHN CARTER REVIEW

I have just watched the new John Carter movie and to be honest I can see why it failed to ignite te box office. It wasn’t the fault of the actors or special effects guys, they did a sterling job on creating an alien world and society and the Edgar Burroughs tie in was clever. However I thought the middle of the movie floundered some what and could easily have been cut to make the story flow better and faster. There was no point in the desert crossing to look for the mystical Gates. It slowed things up but I did like the shot of Carter facing down the alien army and slicing and dicing to his heart’s content, Trapped beneath a sea of bodies, it reminded me of an old Conan the Barbarian comic cover. The ending though felt like the Flash Gordon movie with him sweeping in to stop the wedding. The fact Disney withdrew its marketing of the movie was the death knell for the movie. It was epic and sweeping with solid performances but didn’t keep my attention for the duration. Maybe a director’s cut would be in order. By no means the worst movie ever, indeed I don’t think it deserves the label biggest flop ever but the scripting did need a severe overhaul.

DOCTOR WHO STAR PASSES AWAY RIP PHILIP MADOC

The actor Philip Madoc has died at the age of 77. He is best remembered by Doctor Who fans as the mad scientist Solon who was building a new body Frankenstein like for a mad Time Lord Morbius. This is one of the most fondly remembered tales of Tom Baker’s time with wonderful dark comedy dialogue.

He also appeared alongside the second Doctor Patrick Troughton in the War Games and Peter Cushing in the sixties movie Dalek Invasion of Earth. He impressed Tom Baker no end by reading novels in Latin and by all accounts they had a great time filming Morbius.Unlike many who have appeared in the show he was a favourite with fans and actors alike.

A DOG’S TALE- THE OTHER SIDE OF REPOSSESSION

In this day and age it is a sad fact of life that house repossessions are on the rise due to so many different factors. In a lot of cases it is a relief as the millstone has been removed from around family’s necks, in others, a devastating loss. It is no longer a stigma to have been repossessed in fact it can be an economic necessity and everywhere you go it is more noticeable.

But I witnessed something recently that literally made me stop and think.

It was raining heavily and I noticed a dog sitting at the side of a house that had repossessed. It wasn’t moving and wouldn’t respond to my calling it. He was little more than a shadow sitting soaking wet, seemingly oblivious to the weather. Then it struck me.

Wherever its former masters had moved to this dog had returned to the only home it knew and was sitting patiently waiting for the others but they weren’t coming.

It was like something off the Hallmark channel. This poor animal sitting in the pouring rain waiting for people that would never come at the only place it knew of as home, ignoring my calls as if it was saying, “No, they’ll be home soon.”

Fortunately, someone knew the former owners and called them to let them know the dog was there. And it suddenly struck me, that it can be a traumatic event having to leave your home but no one thinks of the pets. They don’t know any difference, only this was the place they were raised, most from pups so to be taken away from what it knew was confusing and dramatic for the poor creature. I don’t know what got me more, this dog sitting alone in the pouring rain waiting obediently for someone to open the door to its home, deathly still like a well trained Cruft’s champion or the fact it must be lost in its mind, not knowing why no one was home and the windows were dark.

And sometimes we can forget a pet is an integral part of the home, as demonstrated by Marley and Me and can be the most sensitive person in the homestead. They are almost the forgotten family member, witness to everything that goes on yet they are washed away in human events and dramas.

Thankfully this little man was returned home. Apparently he had dug his way out of his new home and gone looking for his family even though they were right with him.

I often talk about the world that goes on around us we do’t see or take notice of and this is a prime example. So the next time, you see a repossessed house, just take a minute to check for a dog sitting outside the door; just in case.
