PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 4 REVIEW JOHNNY DEPP

WENT TO SEE PIRATES 4 ON STRANGER TIDES LAST NIGHT AND I HAVE TO SAY WHAT A WASTE OF TIME. THOSE WERE 2 AND A HALF HOURS I’LL NEVER GET BACK. THE SCRIPT WAS SLOW, PONDEROUS AND AT TIMES SET PIECES HAPPENED JUST TO HAVE THEM ON SCREEN.

IT JUST DRAGGED AND SEEMED TO TAKE FOREVER TO REACH A WET DUD OF A CLIMAX. THE HIGH LIGHT FOR ME WAS THE VAMPIRIC MERMAID ATTACK AS A GROUP OF MEN ARE PUT ON A BOAT AND FORCED TO SING TO DRAW THEM IN. BLACKBEARD HAS BEEN TOLD HE WILL DIE IN TWO WEEKS AT THE HAND OF A ONE LEGGED MAN AND SEEKS THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH TO AVOID IT. TOGETHER WITH HIS DAUGHTER WHO JACK LOVED ONCE, PLAYED BY PENELOPE CRUZ, BLACKBEARD HAS A CREW MASTERED AND ZOMBIES AND HIS SHIP IS POWERED BY MAGIC.

PLAYED BY IAN MCSHANE, BLACKBEARD IS BOTH FUNNY AND SINISTER AS HE TORTURES A MERMAID FOR HER TEARS AND IS WILLING TO SACRIFICE HIS DAUGHTER TO SAVE HIMSELF.

JOHNNY DEPP IS HIS USUAL MAD SELF AND YOU CAN’T HELP LOVING HIM BUT AT TIMES, HE SEEMS LOST IN THE ACTION, ALMOST SIDELINED FOR OTHER CHARACTERS. GEOFFREY RUSH IS BACK, USING THE KING’S RULES AS HIS POWER NOW AND OUT FOR VENGEANCE ON BLACKBEARD.

THERE ARE SOME GOOD IDEAS IN HERE WHICH FAIL TO FLOURISH, LIKE BLACKBEARD’S CUPBOARD FULL OF SHIPS IN A BOTTLE, INCLUDING THE BLACK PEARL, TRAPPED BY HIS MAGIC TO SAIL THERE FOREVER, THE TWO JACKS FIGHTING, THE MERMAIDS OVERTURNING A SHIP, THE PASSAGEWAY TO THE FOUNTAIN AND THE CHEMISTRY BETWEEN JACK AND BARBOSSA IS BRILLIANT AS EACH STRIVE TO ACHIEVE THEIR OWN GOALS.

I THINK IT LEAVES IT OPEN FOR A FIFTH BUT I’M NOT SURE, I WAS BORED BY THE END BUT IF IT DOES COME BACK, WE NEED A BETTER SCRIPT AND MORE FOCUSSED THREAT. BORED AS I WAS, I HAVEN’T QUITE GIVEN UP ON JACK YET.
